Geothermal Heating And Cooling

This article explains all about geothermal heating and cooling. There are a lot of advantages related to geothermal heating and cooling with the main one being that it's environmentally friendly, there no emissions of CO2 like when burning fuel. And on top of being a "green" type of conditioning, it's also economically feasibly as it will save you a lot of money in the long run.

Regardless of the climate you live in, you can make full use of geothermal heating. Air temperature varies throughout the year, but the temperature inside the earth's core remains the same. Regardless of climate or season, the temperature bellow ground doesn't change all year long and that's another advantage of such systems. For example, with solar heating, you can't use it when you need it the most - when the weather is bad, cloudy and so on. But that's not a problem with geothermal heating cooling. There is a very reasonable scientific explanation to this phenomenon and it's related to the fact that the earth's surface absorbs nearly 50% of the sun's energy that reaches our planet. Geo-thermal heating makes use of this by tapping into this free energy with a closed or open loop system, but such systems can also provide geothermal cooling, not just heating.

Scientists know for a fact that heat travels from areas with higher temperatures to areas with lower temperatures. This thermo-dynamic law is applied in the basic principle of operation of geothermal heat exchangers. The geothermal pump pumps out the heat from the earth's core so that the ground loop which is filled with cold liquid can absorb that heat and transfer it to your home. For example, the geothermal system developed by WaterFurance pulls heat from the loop it and distributes it through a conventional duct system as warm air. The hot gas circulates through a refrigerant-to-air heat exchanger where heat is removed and pumped into the house at about 100 degrees F. The same heat energy can also be used for a radiant floor system or domestic hot water heating.

When in cooling mode, the geothermal system reverses the heating process, so instead of extracting heat from the ground, heat is extracted from your home and either moved back into the earth loop, or used to heat up the water in your boiler. Once the heat is removed from the air, it is distributed through the duct system in your home.
